The incident took place in eastern Taiwan on Friday morning, according to the French news agency AFP. Initially, railway police said 36 people had been confirmed dead, while 72 people were trapped in the crashed train.

The deputy director of the Taiwan Railway Authority told the report that the driver did not apply the brakes in a timely and proper manner, causing the vehicle to slip up to 20 meters on the train line and cause an accident.
According to the report, the train involved in the accident included 8 bogies, carrying 480 passengers, who were on their way to attend the annual festival during a four-day holiday.
The dead included a French national, while two Japanese and a Macau were injured, according to AFP.
A woman who survived the crash told local TV that some people were running for help after the crash, while many fainted, many were trapped between seats.
Authorities say the train was passing through a tunnel at the time of the crash. As soon as the Taiwanese president reported the incident, emergency orders were issued in the hospitals.
Shortly after the crash, a short video was released showing the arrival of rescue workers and a broken door. In another clip, it can be seen that there are two coaches on the train outside the tunnel.
